چکیده

Electric fields of repetitively pulsed nanosecond discharges have been measured from electric-field induced Raman scattering by hydrogen molecules. Especially the temporal evolution of the electric field spatial distribution was recorded. With a high-speed optical emission intensity analysis, it has been found that most ionization events take place within a very short period during an ionization front that propagates from the anode to the cathode.

Final Report Title: Fundamental studies of electric-field-induced coherent Raman scattering

A rather novel method has been studied, referred to here as electric-field-induced coherent Raman scattering (E-CRS). Two beams of laser pulses of frequencies, whose energy difference matches to the Raman transition, produce an infrared (IR) coherent beam corresponding to the Raman transition energy in the presence of a direct-current (dc) electric field. The IR light may be considered as an an...

A ‘frozen electric-field’ approach to simulate repetitively pulsed nanosecond plasma discharges and ignition of hydrogen–air mixtures

High-fidelity modelling of nanosecond repetitively pulsed discharges (NRPDs) is burdened by the multiple time and length scales and large chemistry mechanisms involved, which prohibit detailed analyses and parametric studies. In the present work, we propose a ‘frozen electric-field’ modelling approach to expedite the NRPD simulations without adverse effects on the solution accuracy. First, a bu...

A time scale for electrical screening in pulsed gas discharges

The Maxwell time is a typical time scale for the screening of an electric field in a medium with a given conductivity. We introduce a generalization of the Maxwell time that is valid for gas discharges: the ionization screening time, that takes the growth of the conductivity due to impact ionization into account. We present an analytic estimate for this time scale, assuming a planar geometry, a...

A new numerical strategy with space-time adaptivity and error control for multi-scale gas discharge simulations

This paper presents a new resolution strategy for multi-scale gas discharge simulations based on a second order time adaptive integration and space adaptive multiresolution. A classical fluid model is used to model plasma discharges, considering drift-diffusion equations and electric field computation. The proposed numerical method provides a time-space accuracy control of the solution, and thu...
